Taiwan's most senior lawmaker says opposition wants another 'Hong Kong'
TAIPEI -- Taiwan's longest-serving lawmaker has accused Beijing-leaning opposition parties of "selling out" the democracy to China, by attempting to undercut the new government just as the Chinese military runs drills encircling the island.
In an exclusive interview with Nikkei Asia, the Democratic Progressive Party's "father of the house," Ker Chien-ming, delivered a scathing assessment of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwan People's Party, which together hold a majority in the Legislative Yuan and are attempting to ram through controversial bills. Their legislation would give them broad investigative powers and control over billions of dollars in budget funds, potentially crippling the presidency of the DPP's Lai Ching-te, who was just sworn in on Monday.
