TAIPEI -- Taiwan's opposition is defying a growing backlash against its legislative proposals that would challenge the authority of newly inaugurated President Lai Ching-te.

The main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), and the smaller Taiwan People's Party (TPP), which together command a parliamentary majority, are attempting to force through bills that would give the legislature new investigative powers and effectively seize control of large sums of infrastructure funds.
