With Intel tie-up, Taiwan chipmaker UMC makes U.S. push
TAIPEI -- Taiwanese contract chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) has gained a coveted U.S. production foothold through a partnership with Intel that seeks to capture growth beyond the semiconductor industry's cutting edge.
UMC and Intel will jointly develop relatively mature 12-nanometer chip technology for contract production at three Intel plants in the U.S. state of Arizona. Mass production will start in 2027 for communications and other applications.
