UNESCO adds Japan's Sado mine complex to World Heritage list
NEW DELHI (Kyodo) -- UNESCO decided Saturday to add a gold and silver mine complex on Sado Island in Japan to its World Heritage list, signaling Tokyo has reached a last-minute agreement with South Korea, which had opposed its listing by claiming the site is linked to wartime forced labor of Koreans.
In June, an advisory body for the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization suggested the nomination for the mine complex in Niigata Prefecture be referred back to Japan for additional details on its application.
