Thailand's ruling coalition scrambles for new leader after Srettha Thavisin
BANGKOK -- Thailand's ruling Pheu Thai Party will nominate Chaikasem Nitisiri, a legal scholar who has served in previous Pheu Thai governments, as a candidate for the country's next prime minister in a bid to keep its crossover coalition together after the dismissal of Srettha Thavisin by the Constitutional Court on Wednesday.
The Pheu Thai-led coalition will meet on Thursday morning to agree on a new prime minister nominee, ahead of a parliamentary vote on Friday morning. Thai law limits the pool of potential prime ministers to the candidates submitted by each party for the May 2023 general election. Pheu Thai nominated Srettha, Chaikasem and Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
