South Korea pushes ahead with controversial medical school expansion
SEOUL -- South Korea will add 2,000 slots for new students at its medical schools under plans announced Wednesday, a move meant to ease a shortage of doctors beyond the capital but strongly opposed by physicians' groups.
The number of slots will be increased to 5,058, with about 80% of the new capacity going to regional schools, said Lee Ju-ho, deputy prime minister and minister of education, in a news conference.
