Malaysia seeks public views on controversial code of conduct for social media platforms
Citing child protection and a surge in scams, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) wants to tighten rules on digital platforms through the code of conduct, which will come into force in January.
The consultation follows pushback by internet firms and free speech advocates worried about the balance between protecting the online space and maintaining freedom of expression.
In a statement on Tuesday, MCMC asked the public, service providers, and industry players to give their feedback during a 14-day window ending November 5.
“The objective of the draft Code of Conduct [Best Practice] is to create a safer online environment for all Malaysians, with a particular focus on protecting children and vulnerable groups who may be at risk of being exposed to harmful content online,” the commission said.
The public’s contribution to the policy was “crucial” and would shape “the future of the online environment in Malaysia”, MCMC said.
