Japan's LDP heavyweights set to spar for PM post as Kishida steps aside
TOKYO -- Factions of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party kicked off their battles over nominating party heavyweights for the LDP's presidential poll in September, as Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he will not be running and will cede the prime ministerial post to the next president.
The new LDP leader will assume the role from Kishida soon after the party election, which is to be held between Sept. 20 and Sept. 29.
