MONDAY
Xi meets former Taiwan leader Ma
Taiwan's former President Ma Ying-jeou is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a sequel to talks they held in 2015. Ma, who belongs to Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang and is widely seen as pro-Beijing, is on an 11-day visit to China. The meeting with Xi will take place days after a major earthquake struck Taiwan and weeks before the island's President-elect Lai Ching-te takes office, continuing the reign of the Beijing-skeptical Democratic Progressive Party.
Yellen's trip to Beijing
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is due to brief reporters in Beijing as she wraps up her second visit to China in about a year. Her mission is to press Chinese officials on what the U.S. and many other governments see as an excessive industrial buildup that is flooding global markets with cheap Chinese exports, particularly clean energy products like electric cars and solar panels.
