Japan's Kishida faces party's ire after punishing scandal-hit members
TOKYO -- Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Thursday handed down punishments for 39 members involved in a fundraising scandal, but internal confusion and sliding public support will likely continue to haunt Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
The penalties by the party's ethics committee came after multiple LDP factions were found to have concealed income raised at fundraising events and funneled proceeds to members as kickbacks.
