Japan's Hokkaido eyes New York state model for chip hub ambitions
SAPPORO, Japan -- With about eight months until the scheduled start of a prototype line at chipmaker Rapidus' new plant in Hokkaido, officials in Japan's northernmost main island view New York state's creation of a semiconductor ecosystem around an IBM research base as a model to nurture the industry.
The plant is not far from the runways at New Chitose Airport, Hokkaido's main airport and the gateway to its biggest city, Sapporo.
