In pictures: Taiwan's biggest earthquake in decades
A powerful earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Wednesday morning. Taiwanese authorities measured the quake, which hit near Hualien, at a magnitude of 7.2, making it the biggest temblor to shake the island since September 1999.
Dozens of people were trapped in tunnels and partially collapsed buildings, officials said, as rescuers used ladders to help some reach safety. At least seven people were dead as of Wednesday afternoon, with hundreds reported injured.
