G7 aims to boost power storage capacity sixfold by 2030

TOKYO -- The Group of Seven major industrialized economies aim to increase global electricity storage capacity 6.5-fold by 2030, according to a draft joint statement of energy ministers, in a push to support the wider use of renewable energy.

The target will be discussed at the G7 meeting of climate, energy and environment ministers in Turin, Italy, starting Monday. The draft statement calls for boosting energy storage in the power sector -- through such methods as storage batteries and hydrogen -- to 1,500 gigawatts in 2030 from 230 GW in 2022.
