Freeport Indonesia fires up $3.7bn East Java copper smelter
JAKARTA -- Freeport Indonesia, a copper mining company, commissioned on Thursday its much-anticipated new copper smelter in East Java, which will more than triple its production of copper cathode as demand for the metal booms for use in electric vehicles and renewable power plants.
Located in the town of Gresik, the plant has the capacity to produce between 600,000 and 700,000 tonnes of copper cathode per year, adding to Freeport Indonesia's current capacity of 300,000 tonnes.
