China's new fashion trend incorporates traditional elements

SHANGHAI -- "Neo-Chinese style," a mixture of classical attire and everyday clothes, has become the latest fashion trend in China. The boom is backed by young people's growing confidence in and attachment to their country.

During the Lunar New Year holidays, East Nanjin Road in Shanghai bustled with tourists, with some women clad in traditional skirts called ma mian qun. The long, pleated garment, which dates back to the Song, Ming and Qing dynasties that spanned from the 10th century to the early 20th, is wrapped around the waist.
