China's human rights record under U.N. spotlight

GENEVA/ HONG KONG -- China was criticized by some United Nations member states for curtailing freedoms in Hong Kong and its treatment of Uyghurs and Tibetans during a peer review of its human rights record on Tuesday.

But in a sign of Beijing's influence, most representatives of the 163 member states who spoke focused instead on its achievements in alleviating poverty and improving the lives of Chinese citizens. Beyond the walls of the U.N. building in Geneva, though, protesters had a different message for China.
