MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine government said Tuesday it has filed a diplomatic protest against Beijing after Chinese jets flew dangerously close and fired a volley of flares in the path of a Philippine air force patrol plane over a disputed shoal in the South China Sea.
MANILA (Reuters) -- The Philippines will file a diplomatic protest with China over a recent incident involving Air Force planes in airspace over a South China Sea shoal, Manila's Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo said on Monday.
Analysts said Manila must urgently establish clear rules of engagement and bolster its air force capabilities to manage potential future conflicts. However, they did not believe it would lead to the country invoking its Mutual Defence Treaty (MDT) with the United States, as that might escalate the situation into a direct military conflict, which the treaty is meant to deter.
MANILA — The Philippines urged Beijing on Monday (Aug 12) to heed calls to de-escalate tensions in the South China Sea after what it described as "very dangerous" actions by its air force which came after the two nations have agreed to better manage maritime disputes.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. condemned on Sunday Chinese air force actions in waters of the South China Sea claimed by both countries, calling the actions “unjustified, illegal and reckless.”
Beijing’s policy is calibrated accordingly by factoring Manila’s more assertive approach and Hanoi’s “low profile” way of managing the dispute, analysts say.
Manila and Beijing accused each other on Saturday of disrupting their militaries’ operations around the Scarborough Shoal in the first incident since Marcos took office in 2022 in which the Philippines has complained of dangerous actions by Chinese aircraft, as opposed to navy or coastguard vessels.
