WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States on Wednesday imposed new sanctions on hundreds of companies and people tied to Russia’s weapons development program, more than a dozen Chinese entities accused of helping Moscow find workarounds to earlier penalties, and individuals linked to the death of Kremlin opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
US secretary of state Antony Blinken fired a warning salvo toward China during a G7 foreign ministers’ meeting on the Italian island of Capri on April 20. The United States’ top diplomat described China as a “prime contributor” of weapons-related technology to Russia, saying Beijing was fueling the “biggest threat to European security since the end of the Cold War.”
Chinese technology company Huawei is recovering strongly from the earlier impact of US sanctions, with sales up 9.6% and net profit 144% in 2023, company figures released on March 29 show.
It named the six individuals as Yu Pu Ung, Ri Tong Hyok, Han Chol Man, O In Chun, Jong Song Ho and Jon Yon Gun.
