Suga, of BTS, Apologizes for Riding Electric Scooter While Drunk

Suga, a member of the K-pop group BTS, apologized on Wednesday for driving an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol, a violation of South Korea’s traffic laws.

The artist, whose name is Min Yoon-gi, said in a statement that he had his driver’s license revoked and had been fined for riding the scooter home while drunk on Tuesday night.

The police officer in charge of traffic for Yongsan, a district of Seoul where Suga is said to reside, said that the artist was found alone on the ground and that he was administered a breath test at a police station.

His blood alcohol content was above license revocation levels, or at least 0.08 percent, the officer said.

Suga said that he did not know that riding the scooter while intoxicated violated traffic laws. He added that he had fallen to the ground as he tried to park the scooter by the front entrance of his home. A police officer found him and later administered a breath test.

“There were no people hurt or facilities damaged in this process,” Suga said, “but I would like to bow down and apologize to everyone.”

His band’s record label, Big Hit Music, said in a statement on Wednesday that Suga had traveled about 500 meters, or about a third of a mile, on the electric scooter while drunk, and was escorted home by the police. He was wearing a helmet, the company said.

The label apologized for his “inappropriate behavior” and added that he would face disciplinary action.

Suga, like the other members of the band, has been conscripted to the South Korean military. Unlike the other members, who have enlisted in the army, Suga is performing an alternative form of military service as a social service agent. He is expected to complete his service in June.
