‘Shameful’ Japanese tourists detained in China over Great Wall incident sparks outrage at home

The incident reportedly happened in early January, with local security officials detaining the unnamed Japanese pair on suspicion of violating public security laws. They were held for two weeks before being deported.

“As a Japanese person, this is shameful and infuriating,” read a post on a Nihon Television News story. “If Japanese people embarrass themselves like this overseas, it will lead to a worsening of the image of the Japanese people as a whole.”
