New Mt. Fuji rules reduce number of 'bullet climbers'

TOKYO -- Dangerous "bullet climbing" of Mt. Fuji is being reined in after hiking restrictions were introduced this month, according to data collected on the number of people starting out on the trail.

A new gate has been installed higher up that closes between 4 p.m. and 3 a.m. to prevent "bullet climbing" -- people rushing to the summit at night. After the closure, only climbers with mountain lodge reservations can pass through.
