Defence Minister Richard Marles said the government’s plan would eventually increase the navy’s surface combatant fleet to 26 from 11, the largest it has been since the end of World War II.
SYDNEY -- Australia will inject another 11.1 billion Australian dollars ($7.2 billion) into its defense spending to build "a larger, more lethal" surface combat fleet, giving the navy its largest number of warships since World War II.
Under the plan, Australia will get a navy of 26 major surface combatant ships, up from 11 today.
While ruling out Tokyo’s participation in the centrepiece project for Aukus – delivering nuclear-powered submarines to Australia – Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles said Canberra wants to “work more closely with Japan” on technological developments, acknowledging that the Asian nation is a “place of innovation” and is “at the cutting edge of technology”.
