KUALA LUMPUR -- Former Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was charged by prosecutors with sedition Tuesday, following remarks he made during a recent by-election campaign allegedly criticizing the country's former king, Sultan Abdullah of Pahang.
The speaker’s decision will likely “come back to haunt” the government as it potentially paves the way for MPs on either side of the divide to break ranks in pursuit of their individual interests, said Syaza Farhana Mohamad Shukri, the head of the political science department at the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
Tengku Yasmin Nastasha, who filed the legal challenge against the Kelantan legislature alongside her mother, lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid, said in a post on X that “the vitriolic campaign waged against us by adversaries manifested in baseless allegations, portraying us as threats to the sanctity of Islam in our nation”.
