ISLAMABAD (AP) — A parliamentary panel on Tuesday recommended a judge who was third on the seniority list of a panel of judges to head the Supreme Court of Pakistan, government officials said Tuesday, a move which virtually blocked the elevation of the senior-most judge and is likely to further deepen a lingering political crisis.
The Supreme Court’s chief justice will now be selected by a parliamentary committee and have a fixed term of three years.
The amendments were opposed by former PM Imran Khan. Ironically, their reinstatement could help him.
The court appearance of the 71-year-old leader was not livestreamed on the court’s website or aired on news channels.
The letter – signed by the six senior judges of the Islamabad High Court and addressed to the nation’s Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa – outlined the judges’ concerns regarding the widespread use of “intimidating” tactics by the Inter-Services Intelligence, the country’s primary intelligence agency, to influence judicial verdicts, particularly in political cases.
