MANILA — The Philippines accused Chinese maritime officials on Oct 4 of carrying out an "unjustified assault" on Vietnamese fishermen in the contested waters of the South China Sea, adding its voice to a fraught dispute over the confrontation.
Analysts say Beijing seems to be framing the arrangement in a way that suggests the Philippines has conceded to its demands – a characterisation vehemently denied by Philippine officials.
MANILA — The Philippines and China have "reached an understanding on the provisional arrangement" for resupply missions to a beached naval ship in the South China Sea, Manila's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on July 21.
On Tuesday, General Charles Brown Jnr, US military chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met Manila defence officials at Camp Aguinaldo, showing America’s “solid commitment” to its long-time ally following last month’s violent confrontation between Filipino and Chinese vessels in the Second Thomas Shoal.
Analysts link such efforts to a broader cognitive warfare strategy by China, leveraging disinformation through social media and traditional channels in an attempt to sway public sentiment and destabilise the Philippines’ political landscape.
“Our operations are conducted within our own territorial waters and EEZ,” National Security Adviser Eduardo Ano said in a statement late Saturday, referring to the nation’s exclusive economic zone. “We will not be deterred by foreign interference or intimidation.”
But Carlos, who was recently removed from his command, said under oath that a transcript of their conversation, given to local media by the embassy, did not accurately reflect their brief conversation.
