Kishore Mahbubani on Singapore’s ‘secrets’ to success and why he annoyed Lee Kuan Yew

“One key reason why so many international students enrolled at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy was that they wanted to find out the secret reasons why Singapore had done so well in governance. Hence, to every incoming class, I would give a lecture in which I freely gave away the “secret” of Singapore’s exceptional success. I boiled it down to a simple, easily memorised acronym: MPH. Most people know this acronym well, as they associate it with “miles per hour.” However, in my lecture, MPH stood for meritocracy, pragmatism, and honesty. I also gave the students a 100 per cent guarantee: if they could ruthlessly apply MPH in their countries, their countries would succeed as Singapore had done. And I told them that I had personally applied the MPH principles in building up the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

Hong Kong’s new taxi licensing scheme is old wine in new bottles

Notwithstanding everyone’s familiarity with the topic, the old arguments were given a fresh airing on an RTHK podcast that I co-hosted last week. An associate professor from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Tony Sze Nang-ngai, joined for part of the discussion.

How Kishore Mahbubani got US$100 million in 3 minutes from Hong Kong’s richest man Li Ka-shing

I asked the NUS Development Office how much I should ask from Mr Li. The Development Office strongly cautioned me against asking for too much. They suggested S$30 million. Since the Ministry of Education would give a matching grant, that would lead to a S$60 million increase in the endowment. I decided to do my own research on Mr Li’s philanthropic contributions. I learned that his largest donation had been to Hong Kong University for a sum of HK$1 billion (or S$200 million). Without consulting anyone (and without trying to cover my backside, per the usual Civil Service tradition), I decided that I would ask for S$100 million.

Kishore Mahbubani in his memoir: the rebel undergraduate who took on Lee Kuan Yew

“My most visible contribution to university life as a whole came when I was appointed as the editor of the student newspaper, the Singapore Undergrad. As editor, I discovered that I had a provocative streak. The politically apathetic students of my time had no interest in student newspapers. Hence, I tried to increase interest in the paper and to encourage greater debate and reflection by choosing provocative headlines. The most memorable editorial decision I made was to leave the entire front page of the paper blank and print in the middle of the white page a headline in small print: “Are we really this blank?”
